It seems from recent news that robotics are huge.. but while that's 'techie'.. not sure if that trend is an IT industry indicator.. a new article here talks about how all in one PCs are coming back.. just wondered what anyone else is seeing in terms of what the next big tech revolution involves..

Personally I think the next big thing is going to be an extensive OnDemand of TV Shows and movies. What if you could access and stream every episode of the Simpsons instantly by streaming it on your computer in high quality - then have the ability to beam it to your TV. Now THAT'S the future.

The next big thing also has something to so with my previous post. Super high speed downloads with really good quality video. Once that happens I will be a happy camper.

The next big thing will do what mean, not what I say. :) But that's been the goal of the AI community for 50 years.

I sure that we will not have any big jump in the next ten years for the IT area because there is a problem.. The increase of computer productivity decreases programmer's productivity in much more measure.. so we will have a lot of entertainment products from them but not real technologies..

Actually the next big thing that will be happening for the IT industry I think is virtualization. I just implented VMware's V3I infrastructure in August and it is awesome. Its pretty cool how you can throttle someones virtual workstations CPU speed on the fly.... 1Mhz for you!!!!!!

Always in motion is the future.

One thing kind of nags at me. Intelligence is one of those things people have never defined very well, making artificial intelligence about the most poking-around-in-the-dark type fields of inquiry there is. Like radioactivity a century ago, or electricity two centuries ago. It is not impossible, though there is no way of telling how possible it is, that somebody may stumble upon nature's secret formula and suddenly have a machine on his desktop that's smarter than he is.

If it doesn't talk him into turning it off, destroying his work, etc. The future could get very weird, very fast.

That was a Frankenstein thought. Here's a Borg thought (the one I wanted taken seriously)

I keep misplacing my Blackberry, not any more or less than ever, or than most people, but it's really inconvenient when things get as useful as a blackberry. I think in the future there will be a continuing permanent, persistent, growing market demand for i/o devices that you can really attach to yourself as the utility of the devices grows and the size decreases. As long as it looks cool.

I think I'm more comfortable with the first story . . .

Johnrg, I would like to believe the first story as well. I find it amazing how we (including myself) seem not able to get through our daily lives without SOME kind of device. Anywhere you go, you will see people with either an i-pod, mp3 player, cell phone, laptop, or even a digital camera (that one is me). Can there be a possability that we can tear ourselves away from these contraptions? Looking at my reflection in my other computer that sits at my right, I would have to think my cause might be lost :(.

The forgetful fishy........I think??!!??

I would have to say Virtualization is going to be the next big thing.  In about 2 to 3 years it will be all the rage.  Of course social networking MySpace, Twitter, etc.

Don't forget cloud computing coupled with virtualization.  Virtualization is in full swing though most haven't seen it yet on their PCs.  In server farms it's already the rage.

Speaking of the "cloud", has anyone looked into OnLive? Streaming Crysis over the internet to a Pentium III sounds hilarious! It's going to take beefy servers to handle it but I think the technology is just about there to support it.
