As of tomorrow, some guy or gal that I have never met, in a country far, far away, will be doing my job for pennies on the dollar. As a Quality Assurance Engineer, I really believed I had chosen the golden career back in 99 when I first started.

Now, opportunities are shrinking, and competition is fierce! What few jobs are left are being taken by over-qualified people who can't get a job in a higher field of IT.

I must admit to being quite depressed. It feels like something I've worked for all my adult life has been for nothing!

I'm very sorry to hear that Heather,

Unfortunately that is going on all over and until somebody in the government makes it advantageous to keep those jobs here and employ Americans it will continue. I would like to know where Obama's saving 4 million jobs is now (one of his campaign promises) since the unemployment rate is continuing to grow and record numbers of people are filing for unemployment every week.

Having just spent the past month (trying to) work with insurance companies, banks, and government on various personal issues, I can tell you that one is just as bad as the other. Try to get them to cooperate on fixing YOUR problem!

You want government to fix it, spankipie?

Hi Heather,

I would be lying if I said I understand your feelings about this because this has never happened to me.  The company I worked for never outsourced but they would lay off and then hire temps to replace the layoffs.

I think it would be great that if a company who outsourced would be denied any tax breaks and actually taxed higher, but that is just a pipe dream.

How many jobs were lost to India?

Obama said he was going to take steps to limit this problem--So far, nothing!

I know what you mean.  I was watching CNN a while back and they were reporting that the economy was improving, however the next story was about another major layoff.  What gives?  That is almost like reporting a train accident with fatalities, some serious.

my last job went to canada.  my last 2 bosses were canned because they were getting paid too much- no other reason.  they didn't even get the option of taking a paycut.

Sounds like they worked for the same jackasses that I used to work for.  I had a co-worker who got fired for needing a few days off to take care of his wife who just had a baby and needed some help at home.

I know what you mean I worked for a Co for over 20 years, then about 2 1/2 year ago, the Co sold and the new Co. IT dept was in India.. So they sent out 15 or so people from India, put them up in a long term hotel, and we trained them to do the jobs that we had been doing for years,,  Just to save  some money.. It's not fair.. But what can you do?

For one, I would have given your company a big fat "FU" when they wanted you to train these people to take your jobs, and the second thing I would do, and I have, though I have not seen any fact it is working, make myself quite verbal on how American based companies are mistreating thier own just so the MFSOB's CEOs can get more money while screwing it to the workers.

I feel it...

I was working as the Director of IT for the South Bay Assoc of REALTORS (guess how that went...). Here's the break down (no pun intended)...

  1. I got laid off...

  2. My wife who was in end stage kidney failure (very young for it) had to go on dialysis.

  3. My wife's dad died

  4. We lose our house of 25 years

  5. Our cat (after spending huge $$ on vet bills) gets hit by car and dies.

  6. My wife gets a kidney transplant and while she is laid up, the Doctor she works for calls and says since she is not working she has to pay for cobra, so that eats up her disability check

  7. Our dog died

  8. When she returns to work Dr. Dugel tells her that he is downsizing and she is laid off.

  9. We lose our medical insurance which we need to get her 4,000 in meds every month.

There is more, but it's just too much to list here... It's been a tough year.

We have three kids... Sigh.

Thanks Zero... Cest 'la Vie. Regardless, we move ahead with dauntless fortitude and stand tall with dignity.

Soon, we will be on our feet and stronger for all of this.

When I was in Boot Camp, my commanders pushed me beyond all limits I thought I had and lead me to do things I thought exceeded my abilities. One of them said as we were running (our final test to graduate, known as the Liberty Run) and on the brink of exhaustion:

"You will feel no pain when you cross that finish line. Then it is all glory. All of what you feel now will be nothing more than a memory."

It is a lesson I have always kept with me...

This too shall pass (like a fart in the wind).
