Here is one example of a discussion I had with a customer.  You decide if this was ignorance or stupidity.

Customer:  I can't access the Internet....AGAIN!

Me:  Well, I can see your cable modem is online and is reporting an outstanding signal.  Is your PC connected to the modem directly or are you using a router?

Customer:  I have two computers and they are connected to a router, (or as she pronounced it, a 'lin-ski rooter.'

Me:  Ok, ma'am this should be a simple fix.  Here's what we need to do.  I need you to unplug the power cord to the modem, (she wasn't using a telephony modem) and the router then power off your computer completely by doing a normal shut down.

Customer:  I can't do that.

Me:  Why not?  You are at home aren't you?

Customer:  Yes I am at home.  I can't unplug the power to the modem or router, that is why I am calling you.

Me:  Ma'am, I can reset your modem remotely, however I have no control over your router.  Unplug the power to your router and I will be happy to remotely reset your modem.

Customer:  I told you I can't unplug the power.  I am not a technician, that's your job and that is why I called you.  I don't know how to unplug the power.

Me:  Ma'am, Do you have appliances in your kitchen?

Customer:  Yes, but what does that have to do with anything we are talking about?

Me: You'll see.  Now do you have a toaster in your kitchen?

Customer:  Yes.

Me:  When cleaning the kitchen, have you ever had to unplug the toaster?

Customer:  Yes, why?

Me:  Follow the same proceedure you use to unplug your toaster and apply that proceedure to your router.

Customer:  Oh.

This call actually took place.

Hey all...new to the forum...glad to be here....yadda, yadda...

So if someone calls IT Support once a week to reset their password because they can't remember it, is that stupid?

If someone doesn't know how to "Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete", is that ignorant?

If your company continues to hire people that appear to have never seen a computer in real life, is that stupid or ignorant?

Does anyone else have a department at their company that thinks that all they have to do is call IT Support and ask for something and all other tasks should be dropped to make sure that this department's request is fulfilled at once...no matter if it goes against company policy?  Ignorant or stupid?

The basic difference? If someone is stupid, they can't help themselves, it's inborn. Ignorance is intentional, they simply refuse to learn.

I agree.  When someone refuses to learn more about the world around them even if it does not directly pertain to them, ignorance reigns supreme.  I know because where I live there are thousands of ignorate people who have and will not experience life outside of their own little shell.

Case in point.  There was an article about loud rowdy parties being thrown at private residences on the beach here late at night and the neighbors are complaining.  Mainly it was an article about common consideration.  In the comments section, the people interviewed were called whiners, stupid, old grumpy people and complainers.

I posted a very civil comment stating that the article wasn't about the parties themselves but the noise and lack of consideration of the party hosts to keep it to a minimal; some of the parties go on until dawn.  I put no one down or called any names, but the responses I received were down out rude and vulgar.  Now THAT is stupidity.
