What position are you working on?

Off the top, there are a few things to remember to impress interviewers...

1) get dressed up.  This is important even if you won't be wearing shirt and tie to work.  It tells the interviewer right off the bat that they were important enough for you to go the extra mile.

2) Research the company and know what they do and where they are in the food chain and about how busy your position will be.  Again, as above it shows that you are interested and it shows that you will do what it takes.

3) Be confident but if they ask a question that you don't know the answer, admit that you don't (hopefully that won't be too many of the questions).

4) They almost always ask if you have any questions.  Be thoughtful before the interview and think of something that you would like to know about them.  This should be something that means something to you and your position but not just a quick off-the-cuff question.  If you've looked at the company (as in step 2) you should be able to find at least somethinig that you'll want to know.

Other things depend upon which position you are applying for.  But, you really should know how your expertise will be valuable to them (again back to #2) and how your being a part of the company will be a home run  for 'BOTH' them and you.

The position the interview is in regards to is titled "Network/Systems Coordinator" Basically a cross platform server administration with some scripting involved with PHP, Coldfusion, and ASP server side stuff with some user support and web domain support.

The first is just a phone interview, with the next step being a in-person interview. I need to be able to make a good impression to warrant the inperson interview.

The phone interview will most assuredly be simply questions regarding "are you qualified" ??

It will be REALLY difficult to impress the interviewer with style etc... over the phone.  My advice would be to bone up on any questions you think they might ask about PHP, Coldfusion and ASP.  Part of self-confidence is KNOWING that you are capable.  I would still say that it wouldn't hurt to research the company a little prior to the phone call.  They may ask if you have any questions etc...  Also, it won't hurt to interject something like "you know, in your situation, I think I might take this tact..."  That will suggest to them that they may want to know what you meant by "...in your situation..."  to which you can merely say something like, well, you're small enough or you're large enough, or you're servers are probably such and such a size which will mean...  You get the picture?

My one important comment to you would be, BE YOURSELF!  if you are a gregarious person, be that way, if you are more of a shy person, be that way.  If you go out of your way to be someone who you really aren't, then if you do get hired, it will be under false pretenses and they will certainly find out what you are really like sooner or later.

I've interviewed sooo  many people that were TRYING so hard to be someone that they weren't.  Being a student of human behavior, I caught it 'during' the interview, but then I don't really like phone interviews (you don't get to see their physical reactions and body language).

Good luck

Just a note, even though it's a phone interview, still dress as though you'll be interviewing face to face.

In my line of work, I spend a great deal of my working time on the phone setting appointments, and I can tell you, if you're sitting around in your underwear talking on the phone, people can actually pick up on that and will get a subliminal feeling that you aren't very professional.

It may seem kind of strange, but the way you are dressed (or not) effects a lot of your general attitude and bearing, even if you don't notice the difference yourself.

Phread makes a great point.  You are what you believe you are.  If you take the time to get dressed up (or at least appropriately) then your mind will believe it as well and it will get conveyed in your conversation.

The toughest thing I think will be the fact that it's Mensa

Hey, do you believe in yourself???  Don't let that worry you a bit.  For one thing, I find that those guys (I guess women too) are usually pretty accepting and friendly.  The vast majority of them are NOT at all snooty as well as being pretty darned smart.

I've always found it helpful to remind myself before an interview that no matter who I'm talking to, they put their pants on one leg at a time the same as I do. Don't be intimidated just because a person has a fancy title. THEY want to talk to YOU or you wouldn't have gotten the interview in the first place.

So just relax and be yourself (but not too informal). Have faith in your skills and abilities and that should carry you through.

Even if you don't get the job, you'll likely make a fairly good impression, and they will be more likely to remember you if something comes up in the future. Who knows, you may even get a referral or two.

Well the phone interview was good landed a face to face interview that was today. I'm confused on how the interview went. I was asked a question by the interviewer and I'm not sure if I understood the question correctly. An outside user sending mail blasts to members within the org and the linux mail server rejecting her  messages and what would be possible solutions to the issue?

my response was that without really looking at the logs and the settings I couldn't give a definative answer.

Did I shoot myself in the foot if anyone has any ideas on a solution to this give me a hint. I'm curious now.

I would think that stepping back to review some things (perhaps a log) would be an acceptable response.  Possible solutions would most certainly include a perusal of the settings, as her messages might be stopped by any of a number of filters.

If that is the only question that you weren't sure of, then I wouldn't worry too much.  Usually when I interview someone, I'm looking for honesty.  That is, will they admit that they don't know something and go look for an answer, or are they too MACHO (or what ever the term is now days) to ask around.  In my opinion, there is NO ONE out there that knows everything there is to know, and so when stumped, are they willing to admit it, and are they willing to go looking for the answer (or will they stumble around thinking that they CAN'T ask - sign of weakness type of thingy).  On the other hand, even if they are honest and willing to look for the answers, I don't usually accept someone that needs to look for MOST answers, so I look for someone that has a LOT of the answers but is willing etc...
