I know you're out there.

I'm one of you.

You hate your current position in IT, but are one of the lucky few to survive a recent layoff. You have a house payment, maybe kids.

You're miserable, and stuck.

With unemployment the way it is, you DARE not make a move to find something for fufilling, for fear of being the "new guy" at the next company and therefore first on the chopping block - and suddenly becoming worse off than you were before.

Anyone else feel this way? Am I just a lone voice in the wilderness? How do you handle it?

What you call "stuck" is somehow "gravy". You aren't stock, you are established.

You can actually start new things : get a new mistress, start drinking, start new courses (certifications or ...), transform your basement in a bar/multimedia room, get a ATV, start playing golf, start coaching soccer/football etc... build some huge cash flow etc... You got plenty of choices.

Been there...not in IT, but working in a different field. When the paycheck is the only thing keeping you at a job, it does get miserable. Are the people you work for pretty good or are they part of the problem? I went back to school. Not the choice for everyone. I'm able to work full-time and take classes.

I admit I did a lot of complaining. I also kept busy with things outside the home. Have a hobby? Spend more time with it. In fact, spend more time with family and friends until this all blows over or until you can get your resume pulled together. As someone once told me, always keep your resume current and never stop looking for a job.

Hang in there. The only constant is change.

The real question should be "is anyone NOT stuck?"

Yes, I was stuck but I don't know or never knew the outside situation as I could not bear it anymore. So, I said QUIT. I am on the look out for a job. I know it might be misreable to find the same salary or same kind of work nature and specifically if you live in a place where there are no jobs for your profession.

But, I could not take it as I was just a BRAIN DRAIN for my boss and I was not getting anything back except the compensation. I had to be keep on trainining the younger generation and then I had nothing to further myself in my career. So, I finally said I am done. I could not and I was miserable. I am on the look out and hope that I could find something soon to get the pay check coming in. As, I need to pay my mortgage and my credit cards and all the bills.

If not, I have to shell out my retirement funds and live on it for sometime. But, I could not take it as it was a mental trauma that I was going through in this job.
