Posted 2 months ago Again, this was back in the early 90's. I lived on the Gulf Coast of Florida and was doing my own "computer consulting/repair" after my regular work day was done. One Friday night, I was out with my buddies over in Tampa. We were drinking and having a great time, but I get a call from one of my customers complaining that he was working on a report that was "due tomorrow!" and his computer wouldn't power on. Again, I ask him the standard set of questions ("did you try a different power cord?" "did you try a different outlet?" Etc.) to which he replies, "I did all that, but I think the power supply is burnt out." Ok, so I have to finish my drink, end my good time, and drive back to Clearwater, across the causeway (a small patch of land with a road, that is surrounded on either side by THE OCEAN - generally not a good idea if you've been drinking). I grab a couple power supplies and my tool kit, then drive to his place... Where I find that he had moved his computer to the point where he "loosened" the end of the power cable that plugs into the back of the PC to the point where the end still looked like it was plugged in, but it wasn't seated. I seat the power cable, then turn on the computer (surprise, it worked...). I quickly unplugged it again, took his computer apart, took out his power supply and showed him the fuse that was inside. I told him that sometimes they burn out, and sometimes the dust gets bad enough that it can cause this kind of thing to happen. I sprayed the dust out of the PS, put it back together, plugged everything in, and like "magic," the computer booted up. I charged him for 2 hours, so I made some $$$, but at the same time, I wanted to slap the sh*t out of him... |

| Posted about 1 month ago I live on the Gulf Coast and may have had a relative of your customer with the power issue. I received a call from someone needing to get a report from his office and he could not connect either his desktop or his laptop to the WAN. He then, between swear words, states that his desktop won’t even power up, but his laptop is running fine, (I bet you know where this is going.) I asked him what other equipment is up and running. He told me none, that there is a power outage on his street. (Swears again.) I explained his laptop was on because of the battery installed, but his cable will not work unless there is power going to it. He promptly slammed the phone down while saying something about a mother something-or-other.
