Do you race professionally or amateur? Tell us your stories here. If your racetrack has a web site, then please include that in your post. This topic will be for all kinds of racing except NASCAR since we already have that as a topic.

I love drag racing and street racing. My current dragstrip is Palm Beach International Raceway formerly known as Moroso Motorsport Park. It was just recently purchased and upgraded by a local Ferrari club that improved the road course but really upped the ante on membership. For more info see http://racepbir.com/

Yes, I know street racing is dangerous not to mention illegal but that's exactly what makes it so thrilling for adrenaline addicts like me. It all started when I was a kid. "Grumpy" Bill Jenkins had his shop a block away. He was popular at the drags in the '60's & '70's with "Grumpy's Toy". As a matter of fact, the 427 L-88 that I put in my '61 Corvette was originally built by Bill Jenkins. I got it from a guy that had Grumpy build it for him. I made a lot of money with my Vette but pretty soon nobody in my area would race me anymore and I had to keep going further and further away to get races. I kept getting inspection violation tickets because of the fender well headers and then didn't pay them so eventually I lost my driver's license for 7 years. I still drove but I didn't race. I had to keep my driving to a minimum. I had my glory but paid the price. Was it worth it? Hell yeah!

At the present time, I race in amateur races with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). I have raced at Nelson Ledges (www.nelsonledges.com) in northwest Ohio but my home track is Mid Ohio (www.midohio.com) in Lexington, OH. Sorry, no lap records at this time.

The SCCA has many classes of cars, from tube framed cars (similar to NASCAR stock cars), open wheeled cars (like Indy cars), modified cars called sports racers, production sports cars (flat bottomed, but far from stock), showroom stock and touring classes (where all you can do is add safety equipment, and finally Improved Touring cars.  Improved Touring is the class that I race in, and is divided into 5 sub-classes, depending on performance potential. The Improved Touring rules allows only a very limited number of modifications that you can make to your car, suspension, ECU, interior for example. We must run on DOT approved tires, but we are allowed to run 'R' compounds that would only last a couple of thousand miles on the street.

With a stable set of rules and limited modifications, Improved Touring is one of the most popular classes in SCCA.

Mustang, I believe that we are gonna have to get together to do some racin some time. I have not had time to get to the track this year, took the s10 out for a test and tune run and lets just say oil on the tires makes for a bad ride. Truck is destroyed but I made it out just fine. I am working on a 71 grad prix J body currently hope to have the car race ready by end of month, just in time for the tracks to close. Body is done, just finished the suspension, rear end will be ready Friday and the rest of the motor parts should be here by wendesday. Cant wait to take it out.

Did you ever think about doing drag bikes? That has to be a blast.

Matt, I'm glad to hear you are ok! Damn, you just got out of the hospital not too long ago. Sorry about your S-10, I know you really liked that truck. A Pontiac? I thought you were ALLCHEVY lol. What's the hurry? If you can't have it done before the season ends, then take your time and just have it ready for next season.

Drag bikes? Gotta love 'em! I like anything that goes fast. I even like those racing go carts that go 140 mph.

Do you remember Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins from the '70's? He won the national drag title in 1976? His shop was right down my street when I lived in PA. I had one of his big block engines in my '61 Vette.

BTW, I'll race ya anytime, good buddy!

P.S. Don't get a big head, I'll race anybody, anytime LOL.

Ok Mustang, I got the 71 Pontiac finished over the weekend. Lets just say it is one sweet machine. I spent around $6500 in parts for the motor and another $5000 on the body but she is ready. Just gotta clean her up and wait till spring (ya right). I fired her up Saturday night around 8:30 to break her in. 400 big block all performance equipment and ran her at 2000 rpm for 30 minutes to break her in, lets just say the neighbors are mad at me and the cops showed up...Did I forget to mention that it was all open headers, no exhaust on her at that time>>>hahaha. It was very loud but what a rush. I am gonna try to get some pics this weekend if the weather coperates with me. I need some outdoot shots to do the paint job justice.

HA ha ha, I bet you're ready! I know the feeling. When I fired up my big block Vette with open headers for the first time, at least I gave my neighbors the courtesy of doing it during the day. LOL What a rush, I was hungry for a race just like you are!

I am not allowed to build anymore cars until after the new year, that just gives me time to shop for the perfect car and the right performance parts.Hahahahaha that'll show the old lady

Ha, Matt, if your old lady gave you free reign to build hot rods, then your whole family would be in the poor house from your spending and you know it! She doesn't want to put a complete stop to it because she knows how much you love it. Do you take her for rides or has she stopped riding with you? My old lady liked to go for rides as long as I didn't do anything crazy, yeah, right.

The problem with the old lady is she wants to drive and I won't let her. She is one of the worlds worst drivers and I just don't all my hard work to be junk in a matter of minutes, she has not been in the pontiac yet and she never will, I sold it today. (the price was right)
