As I posted in the .doc post we are having an issue with saving shared excel files. More than 1 person uses the files and they make changes and save it constantly. Now recently they cant save it with the error message that it cant save part of the revision history. Anyone have any idea why it would do this?

Shared files existed on the system where I worked, but another group was involved with troubleshooting them, and there are

probably a number of things that could cause the problem/error message. Here is a Microsoft how to troubleshoot website that may or may not help.

It lists a step to check for this situation dealing with shared files.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but you might have to experiment on site with the steps to see if it will solve this problem.

Hi,

Check out the pdf about using a shared EXCEL workbook.   http://library.dickinson.edu/technology/Training/Tutorials/ms2007/excel/excel_share.pdf

There are quite a few things that you can't do in a shared  workbook that could have happened to your file.  It is also possible that someone tried to save the file to an earlier version of Excel which will cause it to not be able to save the revision history.  They will need to save it in the native version of the created workbook.

Hope this helps.

Amy,

That is a great theory, however, we believe they started the worksheet in 0ffice 07. It just started recently and we never had a problem with it before. Our whole IT department is at a loss with this right now.

Need additional info....

What is the error message;  Is Office on individual computers, or is it client/server Enterprise version?  Next question, how are they sharing the files?  Is the file server based? or are the Users folders shared?  When was the last time the file was "known good" ?

It is on a server and the error message says that it cant save part of the revision history. Office is on each one fo their computers and they just share on the network drive.

" I remember that Office, when not run via the server; but each client had it on their systems,  experienced major malfunctions in saving all changes to the file. A shared file if in use at the same time by more than one person,  The first person working would be able to save but not the others that came after; or if one person had the file open no one else who opened it would be able to save to it.  I looked at the changes to Office 2007 I did not see that issue specifically mentioned as being addressed in the new version.

I had the Users save a copy locally to test, and network shares were backed up for recovery.   Are you able to see at the server who saved first before the error message?

Check:  To see if the file can be saved without errors to another location. If you can save it locally without errors, then to another network share.

Check that all users have the same permissions to the network share and that they have not changed.

Hope this helps, and gives you a bit of a starting point.....

Well it just recently started a few weeks ago and its not just the first person who uses it its everyone..theres 4 or 5 people who use it and none of them can save. We also have something on the server that resets everything everynight and if peoples computer goes into hibernation it cant save so we tried disabling hibernation and we havent had an issue yet today..i dont know its just a wierd situation.

Try those first troubleshooting steps, and based on your results I can suggest more.

Good luck!

The error message:  Excel was unable to save the workbook because there was a problem reading or applying part of the revision history

Sorry, I've been ill so I wasn't ale to follow-up on this track.

Network shared files are notoriously unstable, because of the human factor.  The Users need to close out and save the file with regularity.  To remove the history you would have to unshare the document. then reshare it.    The bug came from an update according to microsofts website.  But removing the update doesn't seem to remove the problem.   Yuu can also try to save the file in *.xls format, but that won't work if it has any of the new 2007 formulas in it.
