I just passed the 220-602 exam. However, I failed the 601. What does this mean. Does the 602 still count and is it still valid without the 601 designation?

It still counts towards the A+ certification, you just need to retake the 601 test.

From CompTIA's website:

IN THE EVENT THAT A CANDIDATE FAILS A COMPTIA CERTIFICATION TEST - RETAKE POLICY:

In the event that a candidate fails his or her first (1st) attempt to pass any CompTIA certification test, CompTIA does not require any waiting period between the first (1st) and second (2nd) attempt to pass that same CompTIA certification test. However, before any candidate's third (3rd) attempt or any subsequent attempt to pass any CompTIA certification test, such candidate shall be required to wait for a period of at least thirty (30) calendar days from the date of such candidate's last attempt to pass such test.

Question

To earn my CompTIA A+ credential, do I need to pass the two exams within a specified number of days?

Answer

No, there is no specified number of days within which you must pass the CompTIA A+ exams. However, you must take the same year objectives and pass in order to become certified.

These days I wouldn't even bother with A+, I went straight to Network+ and then CCNA and the phone still isn't ringing....

I'm not even sure what the new version of A+ covers anymore, back when I took it ('97) it was more relevant but I was young then too and it did help open more doors for me. In my opinion I would start out with the Network+, Server+ then go on to the Microsoft, Cisco or security path.

Thanks for the advice. I was going to take the network+ next, but I still have some things to learn first. I will look for some study materials and take it with the Essentials.

It's interesting that you failed the essentials and passed the IT Tech. They both cover exactly the same topics only the 602 is a bit more demanding. I'd reccomend you to get the 602 from www.PracticeTestExam.com. I wrote that material, and I don't reccomend it because it's mine (I got my payment for it a long time ago, and am not affected if it sells or not). I recomend it because at PTE I did a research to see what the competition offers, and worked to surpass everything that other vendors give. So, unlike the other test simulators that give you the true answer and a brief explanation about the true answer, almost all of the PTE A+ 602 gets you up to 4 times more explanations because I gave explanations of why the true answer is correct, and why the false answers are false. Most of the Explanations are half a page long and you really get to learn to cover A+ and even more than that, you get to learn from over a decade of hands on experience. So, give it a chance, I'm pretty sure you'll learn a lot from the bundled 4 test simulators.
