Is anyone else going to download Windows 7 on May 5 besides me?  Maybe we should start a W7 group to discuss the good and bad things we encounter with the OS.

Well, I finely downloaded W7. Its straight forward after you get to the web sight. The down loader took half an hour to download, then stayed on 99% for another half hour before I could use it. It only took 4 minutes to download the ISO.

I installed it on a virtual machine (Sun xVM VirtualBox) without any trouble. The install has a few options so don’t fall asleep until its done.

How’s it going for everyone else?

It's smart that you installed it on a virtual machine first. I'm going to wait before I make the transition until they come out with a couple of service packs for it. But out of curiosity how does it run? Do ya like it?

I like it so far. I used beta for about two weeks and all it did was blue screen. I hope this one fares better. From what I’ve seen, it’s what Vista should have been. Two things: no Quick Launch, and no SOS option for startup. Minor details.

Something else: had to download the XP/Vista flash player. Seems there isn’t one for W7 yet. It took a while to download, but it works fine.

Also: the network icon says I’m not connected to the internet. Went to the network page and it also says I’m not connected to the internet. I can contact my other pc’s and ftp server just fine and I can surf the web just fine. Maybe it’s the virtual network set up by the virtual machine. I don’t have any problems with it running XP or Linux.

I did the same downloaded it and installed it on sun virtual box. I must say I like it so far. I am thinking about doing a dual boot so I can get the full effect, It runs kind of slow in vbox and I can only use 700mb of mem, so if I dual boot I can use all my phys ram. but I will just ride with it for now. I do think Microsoft should give people that got stuck with vista a half price upgrade or something! oh i am sorry was I dreaming out loud again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

SOS is now OS boot information.  Love the welcome and shutdown screens.

Despite what people have said not to do, I am using Win7 RC x64 full-time at home. This is my first install since build 7000, but I have had nothing but an amazing experience. I've installed on two different AMD-based systems with no driver problems and only a few hiccups with compatibility (which compatibility mode fixed instantly). Some games that use client-side cheat protection refused to run since win7 is still in beta but I sucked it up. I've seen 10-20 FPS jumps in all my games including WoW and CS: Source before overclocking.

The only beef I have is sometimes file transfers and downloads start but don't move or transfer at a crawl. Cancelling and re-starting it fixed the problem. If you are having issues with drivers, which I did installing build 7000 on an OCZ barebone laptop, run the driver install in compatibility mode and it should run.

your right, there still are.  that's why they issue beta and rc versions.  unlike vista, i hope micosoft takes the hint.

Does Aero run and whatnot? I bet you had to run the wireless driver in XP compatibility unless they fixed that since build 7000.

  • 1GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor

  • 1GB of RAM

  • 16GB of disk space (or 20GB for 64-bit users)

  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

I have RC1 running on a minimal system (this is a dual boot from an original COMPAQ XP Home system with the 80 GB HD as a second drive just for the Win7 Fresh Install):

Celeron 2.7 GHz single core

768 MB RAM

80 GB HD (currently using 14.1 GB for the OS)

Intel i845 Chipset with DirectX 10.0

What works:

All motherboard functions

All plug in devices (keyboard, mouse, Zune, Sansa Clip, DMC-TZ5 Camera, etc.)

Netgear WG111v3 WiFi dongle (XP Compatiblity Mode driver)

What doesn't work:

Video Adapter recognition of Xerox 19" wvga monitor (XR6-19Dw)

Device Manager reports correct model but the chipset driver won"t

recognize the wide screen resolution capabilities, in other words

circles are ovals.  Interesting note: the Beta Pre-release did install

a current driver for the monitor but the RC1 did not.  This monitor

is no longer supported by the manufacturer and the XP compatibility

mode refuses to install the XP version of the driver.

This system will do well running typical desktop apps such as MS-Office and Web browsing.  It will fail miserably in any multimedia function.

I find it encouraging to see this OS running on such a minimal system.  This could definately be a cure for the Vista WRECK.

I think at some point OS developers need to quit pushing the hardware envelope as much as they do and go back and fix what was broken on recent hardware.  What is wrong with perfecting the OS on what the majority of users (corporate as well as retail) have in place?   For example, how about using intellegent subroutine switching instead of depending on more processor cores.

Leaner is meaner, meaning more efficient, smaller code base and less consumption of wattage.  Green is the future and that goes for the OS as well as the hardware.  As long as the OS keeps demanding more hardware and thus more consumption of electricity to run it we are going backwards, not forward.

The Netbook rage is scaring MS and they are trying to limit and control the Netbook market place by saying the Netbook version of Win7 will only run 3 apps at a time.  MS needs to wake up and smell the future.  The current business model of mass expansion is not smart and definately not the future.  Microsoft (read that as fellow inhabitants of this planet) needs to quit being share holder motivated (read that as in bed with Intel) and return to their roots of being user motivated (read that as planet and market sustainability).

Have been running it on both my PCs since release, both for the Beta and the RC, have been highly satisfied. This past weekend I put it on a buddies laptop that he brought back from deployment completely hosed thanks to a virus he picked up due to user error.

His machine specs:

  • Compaq Presario R4125CA

  • Processor: 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+

  • Memory: 512MB (2 x 256MB) 333MHz DDR (Max. 2048MB)

  • Video: ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M IGP (128MB Dedicated Memory)

  • Display: 15.4" WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen Display

  • Hard Drive: 100GB (4200 RPM)

  • Optical Drive: DVD R/RW and CD-RW Combo Drive with Double Layer Support

  • Fax/Modem: High Speed 56k Modem

  • Network Card: Integrated 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN

  • Wireless: 54g 802.11b/g WLAN with SpeedBooster and BroadRange support

  • Power: 8 Cell Lithium-Ion Battery

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home with SP2

The install ran at least as good as his old OS.

My experience so far has left me agreeing with some tech reviewers that Windows 7 (barring some extreme fubaring by MS) will be the best OS yet released by MS.

it looks like it will take a lot of power to run it, but i'll take that for an os that accually works.

Any Time Microsoft releases a new software the rule of thumb is to wait a year so the can fix most of the bugs. But Windows 7 is going

to fix some of vista problems. If you want it upgrade.

I’m currently running W7 with one cpu and 1g of ram. There are three gadgets on the side bar and aero running the desktop. It works alright, but slow. When the release version comes out, duel cpus and 2g of ram is the way to go.

This is a release client, not the actual release of the OS.  They did this with the beta and rc so we could check it out and Microsoft can see what needs to be tweaked or fixed and whatnot.  That's the whole idea of it all.  And, you only get a year or so to test it out.  So, don't wait too long.  Most of what I have seen about 7 has been pretty positive.
