Posted over 2 years ago I received a phone call from my HR Manager one afternoon from home. She's freaking out becuase her computer at home had crashed and wont boot to the windows login screen. I asked her what she did and she said "all I was doing was cleaning up my machine with a Fix It Utility/optimizer and it started working faster. then I started deleting some .dll files to clean up room and it crashed on me" *Slap* "do you have your reinstall disk?" |

| Posted over 2 years ago That's when you say "Sorry, I can't help you" and tell her to take the computer to the nearest computer store and pay the bucks to get it restored to working order. My hubby did that to our home PC once...only once. At the time I was just getting into IT and knew very little about Windows. I talked to every tech and admin who would listen to find out what I needed to do to protect the PC from the delete happy hubby. |

| Posted over 2 years ago So I read an article somewhere (here or on monster) about the situation some people find themselves in, in IT. Namely, when they are to a point in their current position/situation that they feel like they are losing my marbles. This is what I feel like at the moment...my marbles have fallen off and are scattered all over the floor. "My computer stopped working this morning, can you fix it?" "What were you doing or did anything happen before it stopped working?" "No." "Nothing, huh? You weren't online, no one else used it, there wasn't a circuit breaker tripped in the house, no power surges or power outages?" "Nope...I just used it last night to check my email and cleaned up a bit." "What did you clean up?" "The usual internet stuff. Same as I always do." "I see. Interesting. Nothing unusual happened while you were online or anything? No pop-ups or strange messages?" "No...but there was this one folder that showed up that I don't remember seeing before...I don't know where it came from." "Do you remember the name of it?" "Hmmm...kinda...it was like something-86 or something." "I386?" "Yeah, that could be it." "So...what did you do when you found that?" "I deleted it." "Ah...okay...did your computer come with any disks when you got it?" la-dee-dah-dee-dah..... nother marble just fell on the floor. |

Thinking they where her Eye Contacts! I guess my cousin should have said phone numbers instead :) |

| Posted about 1 year ago I once had a user who had moved their computer and upon replugging everything back in, was mystified when it would not turn on. I came down to take a look and talked her through the steps she went through when plugging everything back in. Upon looking at the plugs they were all plugged into the surge protector strip just like she said.... including the surge protectors plug. She had plugged it into itself and couldnt understand what the problem was. I let her know it was a simple PICNIC problem and fixed it for her. She wanted to know what PICNIC meant and I didnt have the heart to tell her "Problem In Chair, Not In Computer", and explained it was too complicated... |

PICNIC, huh? Interesting... I'd always heard PEBKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair). I wonder if that's regional... |

| Posted 9 months ago So, the phone rings. I grab it up, say "Help Desk, this is Paula." "Yes, this is (name removed to protect the stupid) from (one of our plants). I believe I'm being discriminated against..." After ten minutes of listening to this man tell me all his problems, about how he get over-looked for a promotion, how he was a hard worker, never missed a day, and how his boss was holding a grudge against him, I finally got through to him. It only took about seven "SIR!"s, and then I was finally able to tell him that this help desk was for people who messed up their computers. It got kinda quiet on his end after that. Wonder why! But of course, being the sweet girl that I am, I put him on hold and found the number to the people who could actually do something for him. What I really wanted to do was say, "Sir, have you tried rebooting?" :) "And so, the lion fell in love with the lamb..." |

| Posted 9 months ago My personal experience in this was back in 1990. Antivirus programs were first making their presence known, and one of the PC magazines had a utility suite that you could use, just for subscribing. It had three programs that you could use to check for boot sector viruses: Program one made a copy of the boot sector information and put it on a floppy. Program two checked the boot sector information against the one on the floppy for changes. Program three copied the boot sector information from the floppy back to the hard drive. I ran Program three first (not realizing it) and wiped out track 0 sector 0 (the FAT table) on the hard drive.... After doing a low-level format with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic disk, reinstalling DOS and the programs, and having to completely reenter an antique inventory by hand, I learned and relearned that you should make sure you follow the proper steps in ORDER, so you don't mess something up completely. And that you should always get everything organized (including the steps in which you're going to troubleshoot and repair the problem) before you lay a finger on the problematic item. Have a great day:) |

| Posted 6 months ago I have seen hundreds maybe, but I think my favorite is my wife endulging her curiosity about our first PC together. She had apparently seen me open some executable with notepad at some point, (sometimes you can find the .dll files it uses that way) and was systematically going through the OS files to see what was in them - using notepad to carefully inspect all the gobeldey gook she could find. I told her repeatedly that it really wasn't safe to do that and there wasn't much she could learn. Heart of gold but head of granite, she insisted she was being careful. I think she went through most all the Windows 95 code that way. Naturally the PC was just about hosed the next day. I asked her if she closed all those files correctly before shutting down, she says "yes, I did, and I hit SAVE every time." Microsoft's tech support thought that was just hysterical. |

. But since I self built the PC and was experimenting, I have always had my OS's copy in case of trouble. Anyway, if you don't trip and fall you don't learn to walk.
