This rig is a crapheap, but it really gets the job done :-)

Hey folks. This is my first post here- Ever. I thought I'd give everyone a FreeBSD topic to discuss.

Personally, I like it. It was my first OS outside of Windows. It's stable, fast(At least on my system) and secure. The ports collection is amazing, and it's difficult not finding the software you want. Right now, I'm running KDE as my desktop. I've been a GNOME user for a while now, but I must say that KDE feels much more complete. (I'm using 3.5)

Linux to me is.. Meh. I'm not a fan of it. I prefer Unix over a Unix-Like operating system.

What are your thoughts on this?

Right on, FreeBSD is a great desktop/server solution for X86 systems.  Other BSDs like OpenBSD and NetBSD provide support for the other hardware you may have piling up in your closet.

Even though Linux(Debian) offers a wide verity of supported platforms, I find that as a Graphical Solution it's prone to locking up and crashing.

Unix will never lead you astray.

I have no ill will in the Linux department; I'm a Debian guy, myself.  But when it comes to a lovely, straight forward work environment with a rich history... stick with the Godfather, you'll never be sorry.

That being said, this is where I give Apple credit... they have crafted a lovely desktop Unix and passed it right under the nose of the average user without ever tripping an alarm.  Watching the confusion on the average Mac users face when I go full screen with multiple terminals (ala WMII/Ratpoison) always gives me a chuckle.  Now, if only the Mac port of terminator would facilitate full screen multi panel sessions.  My glee would know not a single boundary...

I ended up running Linux on my G5(ppc64), the included tools to work with Unix didn't quite offer the flexibility of a Debian system.  I did attempt to run BSD, but the system had problems booting a non64-aware kernel.

G5 CPUs are unsupported.

Support for the 64-bit G5 (running in 32-bit mode) was added in OpenBSD 3.9.

FreeBSD takes a bit of configuring but is well worth it.
