Meeting Mania?

Posted over 2 years ago I read an article recently that said everyone is responsible for making meetings meaningful -- from asking for an agenda beforehand if non is forthcoming to raising your hand and suggesting the meeting get back on track if someone takes it off topic. Do you use a meeting agenda in your IT organization? Have you ever tried to stop a meeting from going into gabfests about parking issues? |

| Posted over 2 years ago Meeting agenda? Wazzat? Just kidding... We use them regularly, but only as a guideline for the priority of topics. New input is always welcome, as there may be issues that have come into play since the meeting was called. As for keeping the meeting on track? BRING OUT THE WHIP! Hey!, they don't call me "Mommie Dammit" for nothing! |

| Posted over 2 years ago What's a meeting? As a department, ours tend to be few and far between. As for an agenda, our manager just uses his notes from his meeting with the President of the company. |

| Posted over 2 years ago Got to have an agenda, preferably written, otherwise the meeting is almost certainly a waste. I also prefer to have mintues circulated afterwards, even if informal. Also heard a tip recently -- don't schedule meetings between 9 and 11am, this is everyone's most productive time. |

| Posted over 2 years ago I have clients that like to have meetings about meetings. Painful. |

And there they were 13 heads...all very much my senior and way past my business experience level all there to discuss computer and network needs in the organization. I was so nervous, you have no idea. I was 24 at the time...it was like two months after I started my business. I "just knew" if I said the wrong thing, did the wrong thing, I'd lose the contract. I just had to laugh at myself. This meeting of great minds, the professionals at the roundtable...hahaha... it was hilarious. Not that they were inept or anything...it was just totally not what I expected and I had no reason to be worried at all. When I first got more than three employees I decided we needed to have a meeting to address a few issues. Good thing I did have an agenda...because it doesn't take long for five or six young techies to drift off into bragging about gaming specs or who has worked on the more complicated application and/or server :) |

I work as a webmaster for a newspaper, and there are days when I do nothing but attend meetings about meetings. The first meeting consists of my department head discussing what we are going to tell the rest of the newsroom. The second meeting is the main event, where we meet with the newsroom, give our talk and listen to theirs. The third meeting consists of my department head discussing what was said in the newsroom, and what we are going to do about it. It's no wonder I live with a constant headache. |

| Posted about 1 year ago Where I currently work, we have actually had meetings to discuss what we will discuss at the meeting before the meeting. (I know, just the thought of it makes my head hurt.) My colleagues like my meetings because I always schedule them for an hour, but am strict about keeping on topic and generally finish in 15 minutes and viola! Everyone has 45 minutes of meeting-free time to actually do something in. :) |

| Posted about 1 year ago I think my favorite useless meeting was in the last job I had. Someone from Printers came down from another site to discuss strategy for Notebook Tier 3 - after we pointed out the problems we faced that we felt we needed assistance with, the printer person realized they were way over their head and had no answers, so just changed the subject and talked about useless things we already were doing... That was the high mucky-mucks idea of "new training". LOL. "And in the naked light I saw
