i have been using ubuntu since version 6 and has been my Linux distro of preference since then. After struggling with Suse 9 (now openSuse) in my beginnings, Ubuntu came to the rescue. All I know about linux, it's because Ubuntu. Easy to start with, very friendly. The amazing community behind it already did all the hard work for you. It comes with automatic updates, a feature that makes it even easier to be on top of your distribution's patch. And there is a huge repository of FREE SOFTWARE that you can download and use free of charge. Today, I use dual booting with windows XP (just because I need Windows for some course in school) and I do all the programming in Linux. I have found a similar program for everything that I do in Windows. I love the powerful editor Bluefish, also Netbeans. OpenOffice.org is amazing as well...and the list goes on. I just can't be without Ubuntu now! Latest release 8.04 is even more powerful.

As a CIS student I'm always tinkering with things. I wanted something I could install on any computer without having to deal with licensing issues so I tried out version 6. I've been using Ubuntu ever since. It's open source meaning the possabilities are endless. That is of course, for anyone who wants to really learn about programming and development of an OS.

In my opinion it beats the competition (MS and Mac) as is out of the box when it comes to functionality and security. A major important part of Ubuntu is the ubuntu community at www.ubuntuforums.org . Without them I might not have stuck with Ubuntu to realize it is hands down, the best OS. And it's free!!

I came across this product about 2 months before this version was released, so I waited for it to come out. I have it on my old computer, and plan on putting it on this (1-week-NEW) one, as well. I will have to wait until my order arrives in the mail, though--I gave my other disc to a friend on his way to Florida. He had never heard of it, and wanted to try it.
I love it! It has everything I want and need, and I can find most other software/apps when I look. I also like OpenOffice.org. It does everything Microsoft Office does. Unfortunately, Office is required for my classes!
Ubuntu is everything I hoped/expected it to be.

Considering it's price (nothing) and ease of use for the technically inclined, Ubuntu is simply the best deal in computer operating systems to date.

ubuntu has recently released 8.10, which has an interface call "Compiz Fusion" that has more eye-candy than any Vista or Windows 7 platform. The software also runs exceptionally fast on 64-bit machines. The "gear" for this review should be updated to reflect the new OS rev level, which has far more additions than prior versions.

I found to to be a very fast & stable operating system...

Only thing I don't like about linux in general,
If you yourself are a gamer
emulation for the very high-end games such as Assassins creed even through tools such as Wine or Crossover does not always work as it is supposed to if even at all.
Which is a shame as over all I do prefer Ubuntu to XP or Vista..
Just for the Fact its free & even on my old machine.
    - I Got much better performance for watching movies, they where much less jumpy & seamless..
    - It almost never stalled..

I would Use Ubuntu before Using a Mac OS anyway unless someone gave me the mac for free..

I have read all the reviews and have seen that most everyone loves this unbuntu program. Actualy I have seen a few friends using a Linux Operating system at school as a dual boot with XP. It really seems like a cool program for free. I am thinking about downloading it. If anyone has had a bad, or great experience with this program or info I may need to know please e-mail me. Thank you everyone you are the greatest.

Ubuntu is the most popular and reliable Linux distribution for the Desktop Environment! It's has a very good hardware support, It looks really good, is fast and it locks practically nothing.
It is even easier than Windows to install and to maintain.
It also counts with great support from private pluggings.

Also allows you to run some servers in the desktop environment with Deviant Repo.

    It's just excellent!
