Microsoft, Yahoo Officially Anounce Partnership

Microsoft, Yahoo Officially Anounce Partnership

‘Bing to Replace Yahoo Search.’ -

Yahoo and Microsoft, as expected, have announced a major partnership.  After a year and a half of failed talks, the pair finally have come together and cut a deal.  Many changes were necessary for the deal to take place — a succession of Yahoo’s CEO leadership from co-founder Jerry Yang to outsider Carol Bartz and a new search engine from Microsoft (Bing) — but now that it’s here, it promises to change the face of the internet.

The pair will hold an estimated 28 percent of the search market, or roughly a third, behind Google, which will hold roughly two thirds of the market.  The deal will last much longer than previously speculated — 10 years.

As previously anticipated, Microsoft’s new Bing search engine/algorithm will be replacing Yahoo’s search.  Yahoo’s page will keep its look, but behind the scenes it will be powered by Bing.  Yahoo will focus on selling ads using Microsoft’s AdCenter platform, which bids to challenge Google’s AdWords.

The two companies predict that the deal will raise revenue by over $500M USD.

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz cheered the deal, stating, "This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo!, our users, and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of Internet innovation and development.  Users will continue to experience search as a vital part of their Yahoo! experiences and will enjoy increased innovation thanks to the scale and resources this deal provides.”

Bartz continued, “Advertisers will also benefit from scale and enjoy greater ease of use and efficiencies working with a single platform and sales team for premium advertisers. Finally, this deal will help us increase our investments in priority areas in winning audience properties, display advertising capabilities, and mobile experiences."

Steve Ballmer likewise was pleased by the deal, stating, "Through this agreement with Yahoo!, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company.  Success in search requires both innovation and scale. With our new Bing search platform, we’ve created breakthrough innovation and features. "

Google has previously vowed to challenge any such deal on antitrust grounds.  The U.S. Department of Justice and the EU are currently considering the deal and will likely review it extensively in coming months.

Uh... a lot of pro google people on here. I like google for search, but anti-trust... seriously? 28% combined market share and that's a "monopoly"? You're pathetic google. You're the monopoly. Quit crying about competition, you're the leader already.

This is good for everyone on the planet (except possibly slightly for google). And for all you people out there that think google is king and the other guys shouldn't exist... use google then, quit crying about how the other competitors shouldn't be able to run their own businesses. Of course, with only one provider around, see how quickly their "awesome" results turn to crap. The whole reason they're good is because of competition.

Go Google--definitely go for the anti-trust challenge. Microsoft has it's fingers into too many tech things at this point. While I use many of Microsofts products, Google is a much better search engine. Tried "Ask Jeeves, Alta vista" etc and results are much better from Google than even Yahoo.

The saying keep your friends close and your enemies closer, comes to mind, while reading this :-). Google is the undisputed reference in search engines; they have the market share and have cemented that fact. I mean, Google is now a verb, widely used in the English language.

Yahoo and Microsoft should concede defeat graciously on this front and move on to bringing users other innovative technology, otherwise the product of this merger will go the way of other search engines. Anyone remember Altavista? I didn't think so.

This partnership is only to compete with GOOGLE.
This will not bring any innovation.
It has nothing to do with user innovative ideas.
    Thumbs up for GOOGLE.

It should be a healthy competition. Whoever tops up ultimately the users are more benefited.

The odd thing about this is that I am very pro-Microsoft. I have used their suite of development tools and desktop applications for many years. However, when I need to find something on MSDN (Microsoft Developer's Network), or even microsoft.com, it is much easier for me to find it with a Google search than through the native search bar on their website.

I have been a fan of Yahoo for years and found it to be a fair to good results engine. The problem I have with Bing it is on new installs or upgrades Microsoft sets this as the default just like Live. I have a probelm with this being forced to change it to what I want. I would go back to dogpile but, you will see Bings results there among the others, so it is off to Google for me.

BING: Bing Is Not Google. Now they're rebranding two shitty search engines instead of just one, what a joy. Maybe they'll sink together and we'll be rid of both at the same time, leaving a good sized hole for someone who actually has something innovative to offer.

I will make sure that I never use yahoo for my online searches. I tried Bing and it was the worst search engine I have ever used.
