New Motorola Phone Made of Recycled Plastic Bottles

In an effort to cash in as more consumers look for environmentally friendly products, Motorola has unveiled a new mobile phone created from recycled water bottles.

Prior to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the company showed off the Moto W233 Renew phone, which company officials are promoting as the world’s first carbon neutral phone.  Rather than use the common plastic process, this green phone requires 20 percent less energy to manufacture.

The Moto W233 Renew offers nine hours of talk time, although Motorola didn’t disclose pricing, carrier, or availability information.  T-Mobile issued a statement saying it plans to sell the recycled phone, but it’s unsure if it’ll be available through any other carriers.

The phone’s packaging has been reduced in size, and the documents and box itself are made from recycled materials.  Motorola will give owners the option to mail back their old mobile phone so it can be recycled for free.  Furthermore, Motorola will work alongside Carbonfund.org, in an effort to offset “the carbon dioxide required to manufacture, distribute and operate the phone through investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation.”

Motorola expects to ship the W233 in the United States during the first quarter, with pricing still unknown.

Motorola has struggled as of late, and previously dropped down to be the No. 4 global handset maker.  The company’s struggles can be blamed on its reluctance to release touch screen phones and 3G handsets, while competitors continue to release these phones.

The company is expected to launch a new 3G smartphone with Wi-Fi connectivity.
