Xbox 360 Failures: The Inside Story

‘Dean Takahashi delves in to the causes of the Red Ring of Death.’ -
In a meticulously researched 11,000 word article, Dean Takahashi of Venture Beat has written about the chronological series of events that led to the hardware failures faced by the Xbox 360. Often called the “Red Ring of Death”, it is a condition that describes when three flashing red lights light up the front of an Xbox 360 indicating hardware failure.
The article describes how the business need to be first to market influenced all decisions resulting in compromised hardware quality. Early warnings were ignored as Microsoft was determined to launch their console first. According to Takahashi, Microsoft’s engineers started working on the Xbox 360 at least a year after Sony’s engineers began work on the PlayStation 3, yet Microsoft wound up shipping a year ahead of Sony. Although we were repeatedly assured all was fine it was thanks to gamers and the media Microsoft was dragged kicking and screaming in to admitting there was a problem.
Takahashi reports in August 2005 during the early stages of the Xbox 360’s development warnings were already being raised but were ignored. An engineer raised his hand and said, “Stop. You have to shut down the line.” This wasn’t just a brief moment. The engineer spoke up repeatedly. According to the article that engineer, who remains anonymous, had deep experience in manufacturing. When production results were really off kilter, stopping a line and tracing a problem back to its roots was the answer. Managers and executives, higher-ranking engineers ignored the warnings and decided to go forward. At the time, 68 out of every 100 Xbox 360s made were not working. Worse still, when the first batch of the system’s three-core CPUs rolled off the line, only 16 percent worked.
Microsoft mandated the Xbox 360 had to be smaller, if only to fit in the smaller homes in Japan, a key target market. There was a constant tug of war between the industrial designers, who wanted something small and the engineers, who wanted to pack a lot of performance into the Xbox 360. The more powerful the system was, the bigger the box had to be to provide air flow for heat-sensitive components. Incremental changes to a finalized design appear to have caused many problems. According to the article, Microsoft decided late to add a hard disk drive. They also came up late with a plan to add wireless controllers. Many of these decisions resulted in reduced airflow causing the overheating that caused so many Xbox 360s to fail.
On November 22, 2005 the Xbox 360 launched and the consoles began to fail immediately. In July of 2007, Microsoft publicly admitted there was a problem and took a corresponding financial hit of more than $1 billion to fix it. Prior to that acknowledgement, Takahashi reports that Microsoft had taken returns on 1.2 million of the roughly 11.6 million shipped Xbox 360s.
According to Takahashi, there was no single reason for the failures. Many of the problems could be blamed on the ATI graphics chip, which could overheat so much it warped the motherboard. This put stress on bad solder joints, causing them to fail early in the machine’s life. Sometimes the heat sinks on top of the GPU were put on the wrong way, resulting in heat problems. Finally, games would sometimes crash because of sub-par memory.
The implications of the “Red Ring of Death” issue are being felt to this day. In Takahashi’s own words:
The Xbox 360’s defect problem will go down as one of the worst snafus in consumer electronics history.
Microsoft argues being first to market was worth the compromises. Microsoft’s top game executive, Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment & Devices group, said at a dinner in July that Microsoft’s own research shows that gamers have largely forgiven the company for defective Xbox 360s. Bach also said in July 2008, “It has given us a leg up in a number of places that are super important. It has given us a leg up with game developers. It has given us a leg up from an economics perspective. It helped us expand Xbox Live quickly.”
What Microsoft sacrificed was the good will of consumers, who are critical for establishing a lasting platform. It remains to be seen whether the benefits of launching the Xbox 360 first will exceed the consequences of releasing a faulty product.

Software bugs - okay.
Hardware bugs - okay ? of course. as long as we get it out the door.
We have billions of dollars to waste. why not?
We can destroy any company. Yeah. Just ask google.

MS have turned into a dodgy software company like a certain CRM company I used to work for. Screw getting it right - if it looks like a product, just ship it out, and sell sell sell! Any internal suggestions for improvement - sure but they're told to keep quiet and work with what they've got.

I'm currently on my second 360 system, and I barely played the first! Severely disappointing considering I bought it at the original asking price instead of the going $199 they have now. So here's what happened in a nutshell, also a general warning to 360 users in general...
I ran out and decided to get a "Nyko Intercooler" being the geek that I am in order to help prolong the life of my system, soon afterward I got the 3 red lights of death. When I got on the line with Xbox support, they informed me that all the designers for Xbox were "avidly recommending" that you DO NOT use the Nyko Intercooler because the original power supply was not designed with producing that much power draw from the system. Basically, by trying to preserve my system longer, I ruined it faster.
Bottom line: Stay away from any 3rd party peripherals for your 360, namely the Nyko Intercooler. It will save you a lot of time and heartache.

The houses in Japan are large enough to have a game system as large a a computer system. They just don't have enough storage for two weeks of food. That's why the women shop for "tonight's dinner" every day. I haven't figured out why anyone would expect a quality product from the stench producing laboratory in Redmond. I mean-- has it ever happened? That was a smart move pushing the product out the door. They were only thinking of the consumer, right; and not to fatten up their pathetic little wallets!

the good thing is when you have the three red ring of death and still under warranty they will replace it for you. another good news for those techy like us who know or do not know is that you can resolve this issue by adding thermo glue or paste or whatever you call it on the xbox 360 processor and issue solved i suggest anyone who has this problem to go check out you tube which show you how to do it.

I'm knocking on wood here, but I have never had any major issues with my Xbox 360. But after reading this I'm pretty sure thats because I bought the cooling fan with my system. In any event, I'll be trading mine in now before Gears 2 comes out. Have a PS3 as well but barely play it. Not that I don't like it. But I refuse to play MGS 4 on a peice of crap TV. Gears 2 as well for that matter. Getting new TV shortly.

Never messed with the Xbox at all. I played my friend's and dis-liked it. The controller is fine, the OS is fine but it's too unstable. I never have trouble with my PS2. As for the disc read errors, just clean the lens. If that doesn't work; take off the cover and clean the dust out of it. The mini PS2 I have had issues with. Currently the attachment that lets the worm gear move the read head is plastic which, of course, wore out early. Other than that minor inconvenience the PS totally blows the Xbox away. Sure computers are excellent gaming machines but you have to have the money and the know how to make a nice one. For most people a gaming console is a much better deal.

I had the RROD once, shipped it to Microsoft and the whole process only took 7 days from the day it left my house to the day I got it back. It's been about a year since and no problems so far. I think people forget that as consoles are becoming more cpu-like, they need to follow the same precautions for ventilation and regular dust cleaning.
All companies have that degree of consumer distrust and that's why I don't have a PS3 yet....I remember when I got the original XBOX, it was because the PS2 kept getting "Disc read errors" and didn't play any of my games. All I got back from Sony, was "sometimes this happens with blue colored disc please clean the disc and try again." At least, Microsoft was able to extend my warranty and fix my xbox360, which for me, restored some of their credibility. Of course I was pissed at the hardware failure initially, but I love gaming on the Xbox360 system. Nothing beats XBOX Live... and after you mute the idiots, it's great!!!

Well, at least, there is a fact computer works better on the deal we agree with this fact, we could end saying video games are toyz for kids this way. lol !! But still, there is bigger hit going on PS3 that won't come on PC or XBOX360. Metal Gears Solid 4 (rated M for Mature) per example... On XBOX360 you got Braid (Rated LG for little girls).

If you want to play on a real mans system Try my Dual SLI 280 system with 4gigs of DDR3 ram and overclocked 4.6 ghz cpu computer system. PS3 wishes it could play games. Real men play computers not consules. All others are just toys

For facts the PS3 runs on 2 Terflops when the XBOX 360 runs at 1 Teraflops. You are comparing 360XToyz vs a real-man gaming system.

Sure you can be mad that the first real next generation consule had problems. But the fact is It was avalable to those who wanted to play video games. Why complain my brand new Jeep had more problems then the my XBOX. My Motherboards didnt work properly with Vista when i bought it. Most new things when they come out have problems get over it. XBOX has far better online experience the the PS3, has controllers have batteries can be swaped and are not made for Japanese Hands (much eaier to grip then PS3). I have both PS3 and XBOX and you now what my PS3 is only used as a Linux box and Blueray player thats all its good for.

Microsoft pwned you once, no joke. I'm going to be off-topic... But.. I don't care.
The XBOX controller totally sucked, but MS did upgrade it. In 2001/2002 Tony Hawks pro skater 3/4 were totally unplayable. I'm talking about one of the coolest video game ever made. Neversoft are the best developers.
NB : Neversoft are "leader" in the coolest and most original video games dev : THPS / Guitar Hero. We are talking big. XBOX wasn't compliant to the customer/player. THPS was not an unique game, but surely the XBOX controller totally ruined the best game and gameplay's experience at that time.
The XBOX generation will never equal the Playstation Dual controller in manner of comfort, and gameplay. It is more important than the brand. Frustation is the worse eney of the gamer, if the controller doesn't do the job, it doesn't worth it. THE RED RING OF DEATH is the last thing you want to deal with. Seriously, video games console doesn't need to become PCs. We all know PC need o crash for use to have a job. Microsoft should spend more time developing better game than creating junk hardware.
What's next an EeeeXBox ?!
