WWDC Countdown: Apple Rumor Roundup

Things we Could See
“Snow Leopard” – OSX 10.6. WWDC is the time for Apple to start talking about new OS updates, and recently we’ve been hearing lots of chatter about some thing called “Snow Leopard.” The rumored OSX update would be light on features and heavy on security and plumbing improvements, and would ship in time for next year’s MacWorld.
MacBook Update. We’ll have to see about this one. The MacBook and MacBook Pro are overdue for an update, but this is shaping up as an iPhone-centric show. Still, the hardware platform indicates that this would be a decent time for a bump to the MacBook Pro’s specs, if not a complete remake.
iPhone Lite. Could a smaller, cheaper iPhone be in the works? Possibly a 2.5g version? We’ll see, but while there’s certainly demand for a cheaper iPhone, Apple might want to keep ts smartphone positioned as a premium product for now.
Updated .mac Strategy. Apple’s been buying up loads of .me doamins, and seems likely to revamp its .Mac offering with better contact syncing and possibly even Windows access.
Things we Won’t See.
Tablet Mac. Sorry folks. Not going to happen. Not now anyway. Many still believe that Apple will merge multitouch with a full-on laptop eventually, but now is not the time.
New Mac Pros. Apple will almost certainly wait for Intel’s new Nehalem chip (slated for the end of the year) before launching a significant update to the Mac Pro line.
Of course, Apple keynotes are the legends they are, specifically because of their ability to surprise us. Will Jobs pull out something completely unexpected for this latest update? Will he break down and wear a completely different color of turtleneck? We’ll hve to just wait and see. I’ll be updating InsideTech with the latest news from WWDC all day, so keep checking in for the latest.
