WWDC Countdown: Apple Rumor Roundup
Eric Dahl / InsideTech
June 09, 2008
Apple’s yearly developer conference is kicking off right now, and that always comes with some kind of significant announcement. This year should be no exception, as new, 3G iPhones, and the long-awaited iPhone app store are almost certain to make an appearance. But according to Apple watchers, we could be in for much more than that. Here’s a quick look at some of the juicier rumors floating around:
Things We’re Likely to See
3g iPhone. This one’s as near a certainty as you get from Apple. The rumor clock started ticking on the 3G iPhone, oh, approximately negative three weeks before the iPhone was released. Well, it’s finally here, and all that remains to be seen are the details. Small tweaks to the size and casing of the device are likely – rumors and low-res shots of an ‘iPhone black’ abound.
We’ll see what Apple does about storage capacity. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went to 32GB and 16GB, and 64 and 32 would be a nice surprise. ord on the street is that Apple’s finally going to allow AT&T to subsidise iPhone sales, so you might get a break this time around with a 2-year contract.
Finally, it looks like whatever we get in the way of new iPhones should be available soon. Emphasis on now. Reports are coming in from all over that the Apple stores are receiving new products and display materials. Get ready to line up.
iPhone / iPod Touch App Store. Expect to see this take up lots of the Jobs keynote, as WWDC is the perfect time to talk software. While the App Store may not be available right away, it should arrive as promisd by the end of the month. We’ll see plenty of cool apps in the keynote, and hopefully even a first generation of iPhone-based games.
Watch for lots of announcements from software vendors, as well, since this is the first time they’ll be able to talk about what they’ve been building for the iPhone. It should be interesting to watch just how many of our favorite Jailbreak apps do finally go legit. If I could actually buy a VoIP app, for example, I’d snag an iPhone in a second.
