Analyst On Vista Hate: Get Over It Or Get Off The Boat

Jason Mick / DailyTech

May 19, 2008

‘One writer/analyst is speaking out blasting XP “holdouts” and lauding Windows Vista while comparing XP to a crummy airport terminal.’ -

Don’t like Windows Vista? Love Windows XP? Well columnist/pundit Rob Pegoraro with Fast Forward, carried by The Washington Post, doesn’t like your attitude. Having heard a wealth of criticism for Vista and praise for XP, Pegoraro said enough is enough in an impassioned article detailing his stances on the XP vs. Vista debate.

There have been many recent reports of both consumers and <a href=“http://www.dailytech.com/Companies+Adopt+Just+Say+No+Policy+On+Vista+Wait+For+Windows+7/article11778.htm” title="Companies Adopt “Just Say No” Policy On Vista, Wait For Windows 7 “>particularly businesses rejecting Vista and waiting for Windows 7 to upgrade. Despite Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates ”http://www.dailytech.com/Gates+Vista+is+Moving+at+a+Rapid+Sales+Rate/article11732.htm" title="Gates: Vista is Moving at a “Rapid Sales Rate” ">bragging of “strong sales” in the consumer sector, OEMs are pushing hard for Microsoft to extend Windows XP’s life. If they can’t convince Microsoft, they’re going to offer it anyway, even if not officially sold by Microsoft anymore, via certain loopholes such as downgrade privileges.

Downgrades? Rubbish, says Pegoraro. Pegoraro, a strong Vista supporter, states, “By the strictest definition, Windows XP has been dead since January 30, 2007 – the day its replacement, Windows Vista, arrived in stores and XP promptly vanished from most new computers.”

Pegoraro doesn’t think that Vista is a bad product. He points out that Vista does have its issues, “steep hardware requirements, its strict anti-piracy measures, its sometimes-intrusive security measures, its incompatibility with some older products”, and acknowledges that these factors have driven strong XP sales. He mentions that in Q1 2008, XP sold 87 million copies worldwide, according to IDC analyst Al Gillen, while Vista sold 132 million copies worldwide.

Pegoraro also pointed to the slipping of the Microsoft end-of-life deadline for XP from January to June, under manufacturer pressure. And Pegoraro brings up the wealth of online “Save Windows XP” petitions, lead by a massive one hosted by the tech magazine InfoWorld.

He points out that XP was not exactly beloved by all when it was Microsoft’s flagship product, and he accuses the public of changing its tune when presented with Vista. While running XP on existing systems is logical, he argues that on new home computers it is ridiculous not to run Windows Vista. He states, “It’s another thing to say that on a new home computer, Vista is so unacceptable for mainstream use that you’d be better off with its predecessor.”

Security is one major flaw in Windows XP, which is blasted by Pegoraro. He points out that even with three service packs and other smaller updates regularly released, Windows XP still needs to multiple security programs to safely connect to the internet.

With a bit of sarcasm, Pegoraro comments, "XP is not something that needs to be “saved,” as if it were some architectural triumph in need of historic preservation. It’s not an Old Post Office or a Union Station; it’s more like that crummy midfield terminal at Dulles International Airport, a once-serviceable structure that outlived its utility years ago."

Most things that are wrong with Vista are also wrong with XP, he argues. Again, not shying away from controversy he comments, “And that, in turn, helps explain why Apple is selling so many Macs.”

Vista is easier to use without configuration he argues, which in the end is another mark in its favor. He argues that most problems with Vista were fixed with its first service pack and third parties are jumping on board. As an aside he blasts those third-parties that haven’t jumped aboard saying, “If they haven’t, they probably never will. Presumably, those dead-enders are uninterested in any new sales to the customers they’ve ditched in this way.”

Is Pegoraro a fan of XP on small computers like the ASUS Eee PC? Not so; while he says he can see the appeal, he argues Linux or other operating systems are much better for the purpose. He states, “But the builders of these little laptops don’t have to choose between obsolete or sluggish Microsoft software. Faced with those unappealing options, many of them are instead loading the more efficient, free and open-source Linux operating system, which happens to perform many everyday tasks just as well as Windows does.”

Finishing on a controversial note, Pegoraro adds, “If you’re unhappy about Vista, don’t get sucked in by the misguided nostalgia for XP. Root for the success of non-Windows computers. Or buy one yourself. Nothing attracts a company’s attention like taking your business elsewhere.”

I like vista, but right now its just riduculus on how much memory it uses. You need to have at least 2 gigs of memory just to run vista and its still kinda slow. Unlike XP you can have a dual processor and 2 gigs and be set for awhile. Besides the bugs on vista ,its just really pretty to look at. But to be honest i like to stick with xp because it doest try to over protect. Not saing that its a bad thing that vista wants to protect you from every possible thing that could harm the system, but it just gets annyoing. But if you really looking for a system that works with security i say just download linux. Right now im using fedora 8 and i have not encountered any problems with it and the best part of it, its open source so i didnt lose anything in my wallet. But for now im sticking with xp for now and maybe later on i might go with vista once i can understand it a little better.

I run Vista and XP Pro on a dual boot. (I also use linux on another machine) I like lot's of the Vista bells and whistles while XP is a known & stable system for me that I know will work with all my existing hardware & software without a problem. Im working slowly more & more into Vista
BUT... I think the big issue I have is that lack of choice. I don't feel the need to have to chose one over the other... or stand up and shout loudly why everyone should like what *I* choose.

When I discovered that you have no choice of OS on a new system, and in fact was told by FutureShop that MS would indeed sue them if they attempted to sell XP at all anymore, it angered me. THAT is the entire problem for me. I'm a big girl, I can & should be allowed to chose what I want to use & spend my money on.

There are so many more reasons to dislike vista other than people love XP. In all reality it has nothing to do with windows XP, it has everything to do with VIsta. Any company looking to upgrade their systems to vista would have to spend and un-godly amount of money just to get new computers, then theirs the lisencing for the OS's, paying somebody to set it all up, paying for a whole new network, and a few more expenses. Can you even sit back and imagine how much this would cost even a medium sized chain? More money than it's worth to switch! Then they stick it to the consumer and try to force us to buy vista by ending XP support WAY sooner than they've ended support for any other OS. Support to windows 98 didn't end until XP came out, and their were 2 other OS's inbetween there. This isn't the consumer kicking and screaming against change, it's the consumer kicking and screaming against being strong armed into buying something that is not anywhere near being perfected. That should say something to all the vista lovers, MS is losing their backsides with vista and they know it. They're strong arming the market and the consumer because they know as well as anyone else does that nobody wants their product and would sooner see MS burn down than buy vista. The simple fact is, they don't want the public to know how it's REALLY affecting their bank book. They're trying to push more money into selling this product and are hoping they'll have some left to promote the next one.

Vista = Crap... that's it. Every PC I've encountered with Vista always crashed, or was just too slow... Ive seen a few systems that said vista capable and only had a 1.5GHz processor and 512MB of ram... thats crap for the size of vista. If you want a great OS with a great user experience check out PCLinuxOS... its very easy to use and it supports a lot of major hardware with zero issues. and the online support community is great... Open Source FTW.

I actually disagree. Windows Vista is just a really bad copy of the Apple Mac OS operating system. And to make things worse its not even a good, upto date copy. Its a sad imitation of the first MacOS 10.1 that came out more than 6 years ago (coincidently at the same time that Windows started developing Vista). Any person who even looks favourably at Vista with all its bugs is gonna fall head over heels in love with OS X Leopard.

Vista is slow. In order to use it to its full potential u are basically gonna have to buy a whole new computer. Basically instead of upgrading only ur OS, you'll be upgrading ur hardware too.

Basically -- its better to stick to XP right now. But if ur thinking of moving on from there the Apple Mac OS might be the best option that you'll find in the market worldwide today.

It's pretty easy to make UAC less annoying, too. In fact, I wrote a quick how-to on it for InsideTech. http://insidetech.monster.com/training/articles/1320-make-vistas-uac-less-annoying

I'm going to try out Linux from Debian. I've never seen what this OS looks like and I hear too many positives about it. Vista got slightly faster with the last updates (some which I had to find & install manually), but it's no XP. Lucky I have 3 OS's in my PC, so when I get fed up with one I can jump to the other.

I admit windows xp security sucks but at the same time Vista is another $200 pop and I was offered the upgrade but for some reason it never happened. I would gladly upgrade but because of identity theft, this is impossible and I advise everyone to upgrade for the security if they liked XP because I really feel like XP was designed for hackers and Identity Theives and the biggest culprits are Verizon and Chase Bank.

If you have problems with the UAC just turn it off. It is a simple button click to disable it.

Leopard isn't any better than anything MS has released, I upgraded our whole marketing department with leopard and within a week every Mac user rolled back to their old OS because Leopard was too buggy. and Linux isn't going to make it full stream until someone takes responsibility and supports it., and then charges you for support...

Who cares about Vista or XP? I was a loyal Microsoft customer for many years, regardless of the problems. When all this came out about Vista and I needed a new computer, I took a serious look at a Mac. I ended up purchasing a Macbook Pro running the Leopard OS. It was the best move I've ever made. Everything about it is vastly superior to Vista or XP. It's so much better it even runs either of the MS OS better than ANY PC I've ever been on. Just buy a Mac and all of these conversations will be moot.

America free!? Ha! America is far from free, they are more like trapped in a world of subliminal messaging, advertisements and overgrow company’s demanding more and more money from the simple workers.

Microsoft has their good points but they have some really bad ones as-well! it now feels like Microsoft is more interested in their profits then there customers and clients. they need too make an operating system that the users want! let the users Decided and vote for things to be put in.

Sonj I couldn't agree with you more. Maybe this is where the reign of MS ends and OSs like Linux and Leopard. If we can get somthing better than MS than why the hell not? If we can get linux to get a little more hardware compatibility and just slightly more user friendly I think they would easily replace MS. I mean apple gets little closer everyday.

Bah, this is only one guy stating his opinion, his next article is going to be on why are people not switching to caramel from chocolate, chocolate is like a run down alley in the Bronx, when caramel is like a sunny day with super models at the beach. A crummy Terminal? Come on, it's more like the 1961 Ferrari that was just sold for 10.8million, being replaced now by a 1980's Buick Century. The only reason Vista outsold XP is because retail stores deny you XP and force Vista in your lap. I want to know the percentages of Vista/XP Business Purchases, not garbage home PC's at BestBuy or other outlets that don't even tell you hardware/proc specs, they just have a fancy proc model number to woo the ignorant into buying something that's actually a boat anchor. I'm a big Dell Business PC/Server guy, but now that BestBuy landed the deal to hold their hardware at their stores is going to bury Dell six feet under again and they will have to fight hard to get their respect for reliable product again, because they are going to put garbage behind the Dell logo again...
