I will try to be very short with this, I mean, I doesn't really involve any cost, you can open the system proprieties (advanced>performance>settings) and change the settings to best performance to begin with.

You can also start>run>msconfig>startup and take all the useless programs of the boot, also check the startup folder, make sure nothing is useless there too...

You can also open the services manager console (start>run>services.msc) and stop/disable a couple of useless services that can eat up too much RAM easilly (BITS, Theme are also the first one to disable, computer browser, help and support, fast switching user... Zero Config for wireless, it is useless on a Desktop).

Download Firefox and install it, MS Internet Explorer is just a epic failure for a Personal Computer (as opposed to Corporate Computer).

    Good luck.
If you got free RAM to give to your friends go ahead, otherwise, let them get a new PC, seriously, the config they got is really not good at all.

Concerning the bandwidth it could concern the RAM or the Network.

Good luck, I hope this helps, it will make the computer alot faster anyway.

    Hi

Try this script in run (start>run) : shutdown -s -f -t 00 to see if it debug the software locking the shutdown. Otherwise, you need to find the PID or the process name of the program that is locking shutdown. Your problem seems to look like this. If the program is not necessary you could also delete the entry in the registry which it is locate under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]. My guess is this piece of software somehow called "Gateway" is blocking everything, and might run at at the startup. Otherwise you might have to reinstall the Operating System...
Good luck, keep me informed if the script helped or not at all.

Well, it is a very "binary" thing, if you want, you have jumpers for both hard drice and CD/DVD drive on CS (cable select) fallowing the cable plugging or you have your hard drive jumper on master and then the CD/DVD on slave. Nothing special here. :-)

Ok - If I use the cable and plug the additional cd/dvd into the slave plug, do I move the jumper on that drive to slave or to cable select?

Hi Carrie Ann, you can of course installed the CD-RW/DVD Drive TS-H492, sometimes you just need to use Cable Select instead of master/slave.
With the same ATA Cord, you can plug both your hard drive and CDRW/DVD Drive, use the master jumper for the hard drive and the CD-RW/DVD drive as slave.
If you want to use cable select (CS) you can fallow the cable, the top (or end or black) one should be master and the bottom (or middle or gray) should be the slave as this ( http://www.asrock.com/support/faq/20061020-01.jpg ).
Technically you should be ok with this.
