Major: Software Engineering

Software engineers push the limits of computing power through new and innovative software applications and updates. All it takes is a love of computers, engineering and math – as well as the patience to test your software creations. Classes include computer programming, program design, fundamentals of hardware and networking.

Major: Information Science

It’s been said that information is the most valuable currency of the modern era, and someone needs to create ways to find and store data. That’s where information science majors come in, and they take courses from disciplines ranging from computer science to business administration and statistics.

Jobs this degree leads to: network systems specialist, computer software engineer, computer analyst

Major: Management Information Systems (MIS)

MIS majors not only learn about how databases and networks work, they also learn how to help people use technology. If you enjoy explaining things to people, managing big projects, and developing and debugging computer programs, this is the major for you. Classes include global information technology, business data management and web site development.

While all of these undergraduate degrees should well prepare you for the future job market and what you’ll run into in any of these careers, extra technical certifications reached via continuing and/or graduate education are often recommended or required for those looking to get promoted or simply keep their skills up to date.
