Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems

Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems

InsideTech Degree Center

October 06, 2008

Much like a BSIT, Computer Information Services, or CIS, degrees provide a broad background in IT skills from hardware to software. But CIS programs also include education in business skills and processes, making the degree almost an undergraduate version of an MIS program.

CIS students learn basic programming, database management, and network administration alongside courses in business writing and process. Many programs also familiarize students with popular office and IT applications.

Many CIS programs offer specializations, which can help customize your degree for different sectors of IT. Possible areas of concentration include: information technology, information systems, bioinformatics, computer forensics, and network technology.

Advancement Path

Though a CIS degree provides a strong foundation for almost any tech career, the broad-based nature of the degree lends itself better to careers in core IT functions such as network or IT management and systems administration. Students wishing to pursue careers in software or web development would be better served by a computer science degree.
