Eight Ways to Take a Day for Yourself
AdminSecret
Even if you absolutely love your job you probably need a little mini-vacation from the office from time to time. You really, really could use a day off? Need a little bit of time to yourself for some much-needed rest and relaxation? Can’t bring yourself to be honest about it to your boss? Don’t worry, we totally understand. It’s important to take care of yourself — physically and mentally — and sometimes you just have to put yourself first, no matter how dedicated you are to your job. You’ll return to your job rested, refreshed, and ready to take on the world!
This tongue-in-cheek guide will help you discover the perfect excuse you need to get yourself out of anything!

“My grandmother died.”
This one is a tried-and-true classic because it really works, and it should work for you no matter who you are. There’s very little chance that any of your coworkers have actually met your grandmother, so you’re unlikely to get tripped up on that level. If you play your cards right, you might even get more than one day off for this, if you factor in travel time to the “funeral.” There is one caveat: This excuse only works for people under a certain age. If you’re 60 years old, it’s unlikely that your grandmother would still be alive unless you come from a family of vampires. And, of course, remember what you kept in mind when you were using this excuse in school: You can’t use it more than twice! At least not at the same job…

How effin stupid ..... How about "Hey there boss ..... Been working real hard on XYZ project and really could use a day off to recharge the batteries for the final push ..... What do you think?" If he is a decent guy/gal, there is no way they will say no (unless you're BSing about working so hard).

FUNNY! Don't take things too seriously, people. It's a tongue in cheek article, and even says so in the introduction.
#8 is my ticket! :-)

Wow what a bunch of Boy scouts!
This article is funny but it is also addressing people like those with "workaholic" personalities who can't get personal time off due to having made the mistake of becoming "indispensable" to their employers. Like when you can do a job so well that you get passed over for promotion by someone less competent. Many employers lack ethics or morals when it comes to making money. It's also for those who work for oppressive employers who make unreasonable demands on their workers.
It's a JOB people, not "Indentured servitude" or "Peonage" after all! We Americans work longer hours for less money under poorer medical and labor protection than practically any other advanced industrialized country on the planet.
Wake up and take a look at your life. we aren't what we do for a living. We are free individuals first and employees second.
Don't get caught in the "Live to work" trap just "work to live" and leave your job at the curb...
BTW I am unemployed too since a layoff last May and I agree it's a full time job looking for work nowadays. So take a day off from job hunting now and again. There's more to life than working...

This is crap. If it's okay to lie to get time off, then why not on a resume? How about we promote moral behavior in the workplace, Monster.com!

This is an absolutely irresponsible article. People lose their jobs every day because they lied to get a day off and got caught. It doesn't matter how good your lie is, there is always the chance of getting caught. If anyone uses one of these excuses and gets fired over it, you are opening yourselves up for a potential lawsuit. And except for the last one (which obviously would never be believed), they aren't even very original. They are all tired and overused.
Yes, we all need a day every now and then. If your contract doesn't allow for personal days, try honesty: most bosses would rather you took a day off and came back happy and fresh than lose your productivity indefinitely because you need that break.
